Africa’s most urgent development deficit is not natural resources or entrepreneurial energy, but the absence of accessible, world-class AI learning infrastructure at the institutions where the continent’s next generation of innovators, policymakers, and problem-solvers is being formed. Universities across Southern Africa are producing graduates who know AI is reshaping the world, but who often lack hands-on access to the tools, datasets, mentorship, and applied environments needed to shape that technology on African terms. CAISD’s AI Campus initiative is designed to close that gap, beginning with the University of Zambia in Lusaka, where CAISD is already in active partnership with UNDP Zambia to establish a dedicated applied AI research and innovation hub on campus. The Zambia model called the AI Campus -UniPod model is simple in architecture but transformative in impact: a fully equipped, locally staffed, institutionally embedded centre where students and researchers can develop, test, and deploy AI solutions to real African development challenges, from precision agriculture and public health diagnostics to climate modelling and digital governance.
Your donation to CAISD’s AI Campus Fund will help make the UNZA – CAISD-UNDP UniPod a reality and support the first phase of replication. Following UNZA, CAISD has identified partner universities across the SADC region, including institutions in Namibia through our existing memorandum of understanding with the Namibia University of Science and Technology, as well as additional partners through our continental academic network. Each AI Campus will be calibrated to its host country’s national development priorities, institutional strengths, and research needs and will have different partners.
The AI Campus vision does not stop at university gates. CAISD is also committed to seeding AI literacy at community level through a parallel programme of AI Hubs in rural schools, beginning in South Africa’s most underserved districts and extending progressively across the SADC region. These school-level hubs will not be laboratories for elite students alone; they will be open, practical learning environments where young people from rural and peri-urban communities encounter AI as a tool they can use, question, and build with, rather than as a technology that happens to them from a distance.
The return on this investment is generational. Every AI Campus UNIPOD established at a university anchors a research ecosystem that produces locally relevant solutions, trains the next cohort of African AI practitioners, and creates the institutional memory needed to sustain innovation long after any single grant cycle ends. Every rural school AI Hub plants the conviction, in a child who may never have met a data scientist, that this field belongs to her too. CAISD’s model is built on the principle that Africa’s AI future must be produced in Africa, by Africans, for Africa, and that the institutions closest to the continent’s development challenges are the ones best positioned to solve them.
